A doorway to another world is found buried in the sands of Egypt, further research reveals that the symbols when dialled in different combinations lead to many other destinations, an intrepid team of travellers journey to another planet and discover a civilisation who derived from people enslaved from Earth by a parasitic life form, the Goa'uld. The team led by Air Force Colonel Jack O'Neill, who is verging on the unstable after his son killed himself with Jack's gun, encounter a being whom the natives of the planet regard as Ra, the Sun God, who travels between the stars in a space ship shaped like an ancient pyramid.
